WEDO banana flour has been to the moon and back in search of finding quality flour from quality individuals. We have been to Africa, India, Philippines, Peru, Ecuador and more looking for the best product this world has to offer. We have met a lot of wonderful people, families and stories along the way and we honestly wouldn’t change it for the world…Well maybe a couple of things, just maybe. We started this business in the heart of Kenya with a group of women entrepreneurs and as much as we wanted it to work, after all the money and hard work we invested it just wasn’t feasible. They didn’t have the infrastructure or the money to support US distribution and nor did we. We had to seek out suppliers that were established and could offer us flour at a set price. Reluctantly, we had to leave Kenya with our hearts broken but, our spirits high as we set out yet again for banana flour. Our next spot on the map was the Philippines, we found a good supplier and we decided to place our first order. Things were finally looking up, we had a new supplier, new packaging, and a shipment on its way. We started to pound the pavement, going door to door opening up new accounts, pre-sell online orders and more. People were eagerly awaiting this product, we were too…The product arrived at our packaging facility in California and when they received the container we got a phone call. There was a hole in the container that was carrying our product, salt water had leaked in and spoiled the entire shipment, 20,000lbs of banana flour, gone, garbage.
The moment over took everything inside of us. We had no product and hundreds of customers patiently waiting for a product that wasn’t coming. We flew to CA to see what we could salvage from the shipment, after testing the flour the mold and bacteria counts were through the roof, this product was not suitable for sale or consumption. We had to call every customer and let them know of our situation, it took months before we would be able to get back on our feet and find another source of banana flour.
This was a huge turning point for WEDO, we hopped on plane after plane in search of the best banana flour in the world. We drained the entire bank account searching for these suppliers. Most of these suppliers are family owned business, off the map, deep in the jungle. No website, no email, nothing. We had to rely on third party help and our own “knowledge” of this product. We found some interesting people from all over but, we finally settled on a couple of suppliers in South America. It was hard to believe we were here after 3 1/2 years of inception with no sales, no supplier, no banana flour and no money. But, we kept our heads high and true to our vision… We came home and launched a 30 day Kickstarter campaign in efforts to raise 30K in 30 days. All of this money would be used for purchasing our “first” order of banana flour. After the 30 day campaign was up we had made it, we raised 36K and we were ready to place the order!!
1 year later we have run through 4 shipments, grown into 400+ grocery stores. We’re doing wonderful online, with baking and supplement ingredients and we owe it all to our fan base. You have been our biggest supports, our cheerleaders and the ones that keep us going through tough times. We can’t thank you enough for all your efforts, kind words and love. This has been an incredibly hard, tiring, frustrating and exciting journey but, we’ve done it together as a team and we are so proud of our roots and where we have come from.
